“Represents the kind of socially aware contemporary work that only a few dance artists such as Bill T. Jones reliably provide… In heart, mind, and soul this is the real thing! -Los Angeles Times

“In times when violence, hatred, and bigotry have become the norm, Alvarez proposes a different way to resist.” -Miami New Times

In 2005, Ana María founded and directed Contra-Tiempo, a group whose movement narrative calls for a complete rebuilding of “dance music” using a sonic vocabulary as far-reaching and diverse as the company members’ backgrounds. Through the fusion of different dance styles, and diverse cultural backgrounds, Ana María is able to create art that speaks to and moves people of all audiences. Although she is largely credited to the work she has done for Contra-Tiempo, Ana María hopes to expand her art to do even more. Currently, she is interested in doing work outside of her company but still creating choreography that will function as a mode of social change. She hopes to create more dance companies, other organizations, and continuing to challenge and open up the realm for what is possible in the dance world.
